2008 HIGHLIGHTS
PENN STATE HAZLETON LADY LIONS SOFTBALL TEAM WINS 2008 PSUAC STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
The Lady Lions won the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) championship with three straight come-from-behind wins to secure their first PSUAC State Championship and their eighth Pennsylvania state title. What a way to celebrate the twenty-fifth year of Penn State Hazleton softball with another championship celebration.
The team entered the tournament as the number three seed after finishing the regular season with a record of 15-3, with two road losses to Penn State Beaver and a home loss to Penn College. The tournament was played at Elm Park in Williamsport, the home field of Penn College.
To open the tournament, the team lost again to Penn College 14-6; however, the team was not to be denied. Facing elimination the Lady Lions' next opponent was the number one seed Penn State Beaver - an opponent that two weeks earlier had defeated the Lady Lions in a doubleheader. After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, the Lady Lions came back with four runs in the third and another run in the fourth to lead 5-4. Beaver loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but a line drive double play ended the game. The Lady Lions lived another day.
The morning game saw the team open with Penn State Greater Allegheny who scored five runs to open the first inning. Once again, a rally would be needed to pull out the win. Hazleton scored two runs in the second inning to cut into the lead, but GA scored another run in the third to take a 6-2 lead. In the bottom of the third, Hazleton scored four runs and added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, while shutting down GA over the final four innings to win 8-6.
Next, the team faced Penn College once again. Penn College sat as the only team left and had no losses yet in tournament play; that meant the Lady Lions needed defeat Penn College two games in a row. In the opening game, Penn College scored three runs in the bottom of the third to lead 3-0. Then the Hazleton bats came alive with three runs in the fourth to tie the game. In the top of the fifth, Hazleton scored eight runs to take an 11-3 lead. Penn College could not score in the fifth and the game ended on the eight-run rule at that point.
The final game would decide the championship. Both teams scored two runs in the first. The Lady Lions put six runs on the scoreboard in the third to take an 8-2 lead, but the Lady Wild Cats were not finished yet. Penn College scored five in the bottom of the third and a single run in the fourth to knot the score at 8. Hazleton came back and pushed across two runs in the sixth, holding on to secure the win and the championship as they shut down PC in the final two innings. When the final out - a fly ball to right field - was caught by Lea Barrett, the celebration was on! The Lady Lions finished 19-4 in the PSUAC and 25-15-1 overall for the 2007-2008 season.
Overview
The Lady Lions work out with a pre-season practice schedule in the fall on the campus softball field and participate in the northeast Pennsylvania Invitational Fall Tournament. Cold weather chases the team indoors over the winter with plenty of batting practice at the indoor batting cage and a conditioning and weight training program. In February, the team prepares for their Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) schedule with daily indoor practice until the weather breaks. The team travels south in early March over spring break to get in some early practice and pre-season games at the Disney World Spring Training facilities in Florida. The team plays 35 to 45 games in a season with the cooperation of the weather.
The 2008-2009 Lady Lions softball team will be playing in its 26th year of competition, continuing the strong tradition of excellence and championship softball.

MEET THE COACH
Marty Mrozinski returns for his seventh season as head coach. He has guided the Lady Lions to a conference record of 74–16 over the past four seasons. Coach Mrozinski was named PSUAC Coach of the Year when he guided the Lady Lions to their 8th Pennsylvania State Championship in 2008. Through successful recruiting, the Lady Lions have again continued the tradition of championship softball established by the team over the past twenty-five seasons. Another great recruiting class for 2010 has the Lady Lions in position to make another championship run.
Coach Mrozinski, a successful high school softball coach, is well known throughout the region as the head softball coach of Bishop Hafey High School in Hazleton from 2000 to 2003 and MMI Prep School in Freeland from 1996 to 1999. Coach Mrozinski was selected as Wyoming Valley Division III Softball Coach of the Year when Hafey captured their first ever Wyoming Valley Conference championship in 2000, their first championship since 1980. In four seasons, Bishop Hafey compiled a league record of 44–13 and qualified for Pennsylvania (PIAA) District 2 playoffs each year. In three different seasons, Bishop Hafey was rated in the top ten of all Class A high schools in Pennsylvania.
At MMI Prep, the team competed in the Schuylkill League and qualified for District 11 playoffs three times while setting school records for wins in a season. Coach Mrozinski was a baseball coach at Weatherly Area High School for seven years, an assistant baseball coach for one year at Penn State Hazleton, and spent nine years as a high school girls' varsity basketball coach.
Coach Mrozinski is earning the reputation as one of the top recruiters at Penn State Hazleton. Through his efforts, he has rebuilt and returned the Hazleton campus softball program to its strong winning tradition. During the 2007 spring semester, Coach Mrozinski became the first Penn State Hazleton coach to guide two different teams into the PSUAC playoffs in the same semester when the women's basketball team reached the elite six and the softball team finished third overall. Both teams duplicated the accomplishment in spring 2008.
Marty and his wife, Sharon, are parents of three daughters, Kelly, Salena and Megan, and have five grandchildren. Kelly and Salena are Penn State graduates. Megan, a former Penn State Hazleton assistant softball coach, received her bachelor’s degree in biology from East Stroudsburg University in 2004 and is currently employed at the Maryland Zoo. Marty’s dad, Ron Mrozinski, is a former professional baseball player with the Philadelphia Phillies and Detroit Tigers organizations. Marty is also in his third year as the Penn State Hazleton women's basketball head coach.
