Student Support Initiative

To our alumni and friends:

Recently, representatives of our Penn State Hazleton alumni constituent groups met to discuss ways to respond to the recent crisis at Penn State. The very positive outcome of that meeting was our Student Support Initiative. The campus students received over 150 postcards and messages, and they were placed on display in the Charles T. Butler Teaching and Learning Resource Center until Spring Break. Supporting our students in this way as they sat for fall finals, departed for the holiday break, and return to campus to begin their spring semester had a very positive and lasting impact. Thank you for your support of Penn State and our students!

 

Thanks to your participation and generosity, the 2011 golf outing was once again a ton of fun and a great success!

Mark your calendars and make your reservation NOW for the 2012 golf outing on Friday, May 18, 2012 at Sand Springs Golf Club. Day-of-event check-in begins at 11:30. The pre-paid registration fee includes:

  • Greens fees
  • Cart rental
  • Hot dog and beverage coupon for lunch
  • Buffet dinner after tournament
  • Loads of door prizes (including a football autographed by the late coach Joe Paterno)

About Adam Taliaferro

On a Saturday in September, with less then two minutes remaining in the game against rival Ohio State, Adam Taliaferro made a routine helmet to helmet tackle that would change the course of his life. The Voorhees, New Jersey native had broken his neck--the same injury suffered by Christopher Reeves. He lay motionless on the field. Given only a 3% chance of ever walking again, Adam had very different ideas and today he not only walks, but he walks well.

"Adam is our miracle," says legendary Penn State Coach Joe Paterno. He is the personification of triumph over tragedy, an inspiration to his teammates, his Penn State family, and anyone who hears his story.

Prior to his injury, Adam was an NFL prospect if there ever was one. A cornerback, he was ranked the seventh best high school player in the nation when he graduated as a National Honor Society member. Offered scholarships to numerous schools, Adam chose to play for Penn State and Coach Paterno.

Though playing football is no longer in Adam's future his inspirational tale of recovery has been followed Happy Valley as well as the nation, leading authors Scott Brown and Sam Carchidi to chronicle his remarkable story in their 2001 book Miracle in the Making.

Adam graduated from Penn State, on time, in 2005. In his remaining time at school, he received the Maxwell Football Club's Spirit Award and remained a part of the Penn State football team.

Adam is now an attorney in at Duane Morris, LLP. Adam has also started “The Adam Taliaferro Foundation”, which provides financial assistance to individuals affected by spinal cord injuries. Through his foundation, Adam continues to provide hope for so many people who feel that there is no reason to hope at all.
